Walking the Dog

Posted by anonymous on June 14, 2010 at 8:04 AM

The boy is so smart that after one long spin, he goes the other way.Just off to have our long morning walk as prescribed by the dog whisperer. Itell you that man has helped me so much with this pup. I am a rather quietperson anyway but just watching how energy is picked up by the canine world without using words at times is amazing. It also helps to have words that he does understand like outside and up etc but for giving boundaries, I find silence is the best route.

Have a great day, Vicki and J.P.

The above comment comes from a friend of mine that corresponds with me on a regular bases about her Boston Terrier J.P. (Jackpot)

Walking your dog is an important part of owning a dog. It is also an important part of everyday health benefits for you and your dog. This is not only a good time to bond with your dog. It burns off that excess energy and gives you a more content and peaceful dog.

Even if you have a large fence yard this does not mean your dog will get the excercise it needs. Apartment dogs should get out at least four times a day.

Walking is a great time to work on obedience and socialization skills. Walking also has the same benefits for your dog as it does for you.

Walking your dog soon after he eats is the time he is most likely to urinate and defecate. (This works well with schedule feeding which usually equals schedule defecating, helpful when you need to be out the door to work.)

Many communities have leash laws. Regardless of the laws the leash is the safest way to walk your dog. Even the best behaved dog will become distracted and may cross the street unexpectly or wander into a yard uninviited.

Many cities have dog parks, check these out. Wonderful places to met like minded people and let your dog met doggie friends. There are also Boston Terrier, Boxer, Chihuahua etc Meet ups. Google your breed and Meet Up and you can come up with your nearest meet up group.

As you know I always encourage the Puppy Kindergarten and at least an Obedience class. When you take these classes your instructor will recommend the proper gear for you pup. I like the halter or harness as some call it to start. But do follow your Instructors advice after starting your classes, for each dog is different in there needs. Your classes will teach how to control your dog for a more pleasent walk.

Always carry the the baggies that you can pick up your pups deposits, be a good neighbor.

Happy Trails!
